Kitchen Floor Plans That Work

When it comes to a kitchen, the floor plan is crucial. People spend a huge percentage of their time at home in their kitchens cooking meals, eating with family, and entertaining friends. Because this area is used so often, it's important for homeowners to choose kitchen floor plans that allow for comfortable and efficient living. When it's time to update the look of a house, changing the look or construction of the kitchen can have a major impact on the overall feel of the house.

Making the best use of a kitchen space can be done by either remodeling the room, or by rearranging the appliances and cabinetry in a way that makes the area feel new and fresh. Two important things to consider about kitchen floor plans are spacing and appliances. Does the room need to be remodeled in order to make it bigger and more open, or can extra space be achieved by staging the room differently? Another option to consider before remodeling is to simply add some type of island to the room in order to allow for easier food preparation and additional dining space.

Most kitchen usage revolves around the sink, the stove and the refrigerator. Popular choices in kitchen floor plans include center island plans, L-shapes, and U-shapes that divide the room up according to these highly utilized stations.  U-shaped designs are commonly used in larger kitchens. In a U-shaped room, the sink, the cook top and refrigerator are placed on three different walls. In very small kitchens, these three stations may all be staged along one wall. In an L-shaped plan, two elements will occupy one wall, and the third is placed along a second wall. An alternate plan involves staging these three areas in a triangle shape.

Before deciding on new kitchen floor plans, it's important to spend some time looking at lots of different layouts to determine what type of area will work best for your needs. If complete remodeling is chosen, keep in mind that new appliances may need to be purchased if the new floor plans and designs don't match the feel of the existing appliances. Before jumping into a new design, take time to study the current kitchen usage in your household. Decide if it's important to have more sitting and dining space, or whether your overall goal is to improve the size and efficiency of the area where food is prepared. With careful research and groundwork, it's possible to come up with a kitchen plan that will be a perfect fit.
